What is a cooperative Microschool?

Village Roots is a cooperative microschool and enrichment community for home-based learners that blends the support of skilled educators with the connection and involvement of a cooperative village.

Unlike many traditional homeschool co-ops where parents remain on-site and lead the classes, Village Roots classrooms are held by hired educators who create safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environments where children can learn through play, creativity, exploration, collaboration, and meaningful experiences.

Children are encouraged to follow their curiosity, build relationships, and grow at their own pace, while educators thoughtfully support learning and create opportunities for connection, confidence, and discovery.

Families are an important part of our village. Parents and caregivers support classrooms through a rotating volunteer schedule, assisting in the learning environment while helping us maintain strong adult-to-child ratios and meaningful relationships.

Outside the classroom, families also contribute through a Parent Job, helping support the behind-the-scenes work that keeps Village Roots thriving. From event planning and classroom prep to committees, fundraising, and administrative support – our village works together to make this community possible.

At Village Roots, cooperative education means we don’t just learn alongside one another – we grow, contribute, and build something meaningful together.

Is Village Roots Collective the Right Fit?

Village Roots Collective is a relationship-centered, cooperative microschool where children learn through play, exploration, and meaningful relationships.

Because we are a small nonprofit cooperative, our teachers support the needs of the entire classroom community and are not able to serve as one-on-one aides or behavioral therapists.

Children who are able to participate safely and successfully within our cooperative learning environment typically thrive at VRC.

If a child requires ongoing individualized support in order to participate safely, a parent or designated adult may be asked to remain on-site as that child’s 1:1 support person. In some situations, Village Roots Collective may determine that we are not the best fit for a family’s current needs.

We encourage families to reach out before enrolling so we can have an honest conversation about whether our program is likely to be a good fit.
